About this place

Sonipat (also spelled Sonepat) is an ancient city in southern Haryana, with roots reaching back to the Mahabharata epic. Legend traces its name from Swarnprastha — the "Golden City" — a settlement said to have been founded by the Pandava brothers. Today it sits a short distance from Delhi along National Highway 1, blending historical layers with contemporary North Indian life.

The city serves as a practical base for exploring the region and is best known among travelers for its food scene, particularly the famous Murthal dhabas just north of town. While sightseeing options are limited, the culinary draw and easy road and rail access make Sonipat a worthwhile stop for those moving between Delhi and points north.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive by road or rail — The city lies on NH-1 and the Ambala–Delhi railway line, with frequent passenger trains connecting it to the capital.
  • Time meals at Murthal — The famous dhabas are best visited during a road trip; plan a breakfast or lunch stop to sample paranthas at well-known spots like Ahuja No. 1 or Gulshan.
  • Use as a transit stop — With limited attractions, Sonipat works best as a short food-focused break en route to larger destinations rather than a standalone overnight stay.
