About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Songjiang is a district of Shanghai located about 30 km southwest of the city center, blending old and new China into one convenient getaway. The district is divided by the Huhang expressway: the northern part is Songjiang Xincheng, a modern new town with easy metro access, while the southern part near the river is the old town, where most of the historic sights are found.

This rapidly developing area offers a fascinating contrast — from ancient pagodas and traditional neighborhoods in the west to gleaming shopping streets and university campuses in the east. With affordable transport links from central Shanghai — including metro, train, bus, and taxi options — Songjiang makes for an easy day trip or a more relaxed base for exploring Shanghai’s southwestern edge.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Getting there from Shanghai — Take metro Line 9 to the end (Songjiang Xincheng) or use the Jinshan Railway from Shanghai South or Hongqiao. Buses (Sightseeing Bus 1A from East Shanghai Stadium) and taxis (around ¥70 from central Shanghai) are also options.
  • Getting around Songjiang — The Songmin bus line runs west‑east connecting the main pagodas and old town. Taxis are available at similar rates to Shanghai (¥8–¥10 per km).
  • Plan for travel time — The bus from Jianchuan station to Fangta Pagoda takes over an hour, so give yourself enough time to explore the old town without rushing.
  • Check train schedules — Express trains on the Jinshan Railway bypass some Songjiang stops. Use local services or metro for full access.
  • Pack for the season — If visiting in autumn or spring, bring layers and rain gear; summer visitors should prepare for heat and humidity; winter requires warm clothing.
