About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

The waters of the Cape Peninsula and False Bay offer one of the world’s most varied temperate dive destinations, with over 300 named sites accessible within a day trip from central Cape Town. Straddling two marine bioregions, the area provides a dramatic split between the cool, kelp-rich Atlantic seaboard and the warmer, reef-filled expanse of False Bay. Divers encounter everything from shallow shore-entry kelp forests and granite pinnacles to deep offshore wrecks and vertiginous drop-offs, often on the same trip.

Underwater landscapes are shaped by ancient granites and layered sandstones, forming boulder stacks, gullies, caverns and swim-throughs. Marine life is equally diverse: Cape fur seals, sevengill cowsharks, colourful nudibranchs and endemic reef fish share these habitats, while seasonal visitors include southern right whales and pelagic schools of yellowtail. A permit is required for most sites, which lie within the Table Mountain National Park or Robben Island Marine Protected Areas.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Kelp forest dives — Explore dense forests of sea bamboo and split-fan kelp on the Atlantic seaboard; the sheltered shallows offer dramatic light and abundant macro life.
  • Whittle Rock and offshore reefs — Join a boat trip to this massive granite pinnacle rising from 40 m to within 5 m of the surface, attracting large shoals of fish and occasional pelagics.
  • Shore diving from Miller’s Point — Navigate entry points like Windmill Beach or the slipway area for independent dives over mixed reef and sand, with a chance of seeing cowsharks at nearby sites.
  • Great white shark cage diving — Book a licensed operator for surface or breath-hold cage encounters around Seal Island; the peak season runs from April to September but operators run year-round.
  • Wreck exploration — Dive deliberately scuttled artificial reefs and historic wrecks, many encrusted with colourful invertebrates and serving as fish aggregation sites in both False Bay and the Atlantic approaches.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Cape fur seals — Playful and curious seals are encountered at many sites, particularly off Duiker Point and the outer reefs of False Bay, often approaching divers closely.
  • Sevengill cowsharks — Regular sightings at sites such as Millers Point and other west False Bay reefs; these prehistoric-looking sharks cruise the kelp edges and sandy channels.
  • Endemic reef fish and nudibranchs — Spot colourful klipfish, red romans, and vibrant nudibranchs on nearly every dive; the Marine Protected Areas harbour unusually dense populations.
  • Shipwrecks as artificial reefs — Many wrecks from the 19th century onward lie in diveable depths, their hulls transformed into multi-layered habitats for soft corals, sponges, and resident fish.
  • Marine big-five encounters — On rare pelagic trips, divers may see oceanic sunfish, Bryde’s whales, or passing common and dusky dolphins, particularly near Cape Point and the open-mouth reefs.

Best Time to Visit

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
See Ranked Windows ↑
  • Late November–early April (general conditions) — The most comfortable travel window brings warm air temperatures averaging 21.2°C, low rainfall, and light cloud cover, making topside logistics easy.
  • Summer (Dec–Feb) — Best for boat trips to offshore reefs and wrecks when calm spells occur; be prepared for strong south-easterly afternoons that can curtail diving.
  • April–September (cage diving season) — Peak time for great white shark encounters at Seal Island; winter swells and cold fronts dominate, so have flexible plans and alternative sites.
  • Spring and autumn — Transitional months often deliver a balance of milder winds, acceptable water visibility, and comfortable air temperatures, as well as fewer crowds on boats and shore entries.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Permit requirements — A Marine Protected Area permit is mandatory for all scuba diving; annual and temporary permits are available at post offices, dive shops, and charter operators.
  • Transport and logistics — Public transport is not diver-friendly; renting a car is the most practical option, though some operators offer collection from your accommodation if arranged in advance.
  • Equipment considerations — Open-heel fins with hard-soled boots are recommended for rocky shore entries; a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) is preferred in kelp and essential on boat dives.
  • Shore dive planning — Research entry and exit points carefully with local advice; mark landmarks from the water before descending, and always tell someone ashore your expected return time.
  • Book boat charters early — Most operators use rigid inflatable boats launched from slipways; if you need a divemaster, buddy, or rental gear, confirm these arrangements when booking.
