About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Sohag is a growing city in Middle Egypt, stretching along both banks of the fertile Nile River valley. Originally part of Girga Governorate, Sohag and its surrounding region were established as a separate governorate in the 1960s and have expanded rapidly since. The older downtown lies on the west bank, while the east bank has a more contemporary feel.

Long before its modern development, the area was inhabited by Coptic monks seeking solitude in the desert landscape. Today it serves as a regional center with a population of over 260,000, offering visitors a glimpse of Upper Egyptian life away from the main tourist trail.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Plan for long distances — archaeological sites like Athribis lie outside the city; arrange private transport or a taxi rather than relying on limited public options.
  • Fly if possible — Sohag International Airport (about 30 km away) provides an easier alternative to the lengthy drive from Cairo, with a taxi into the city costing around 150 LE.
  • Dress appropriately for the heat — lightweight, sun-protective clothing and plenty of water are essential, especially outside the October–May shoulder windows.
