About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Sofia is a capital of layers — 2,500 years of history are packed into its walkable center, where Roman ruins, Ottoman mosques, and Stalinist-era landmarks sit alongside glass-fronted offices and lively café terraces. The city was founded around natural hot springs, and you can still drink from mineral-water fountains in the heart of town. Its location at the foot of Vitosha Mountain means skiing or hiking is only a short bus ride away, making Sofia one of the few European capitals with a genuine mountain playground on its doorstep.

Today’s Sofia feels both lived-in and quickly modernizing. Yellow-brick streets, a well-developed metro, and a young nightlife scene create a city that rewards unhurried exploration — whether you’re church-hopping through the "triangle of religious tolerance" or catching a tram to a communist-era disco in the student quarter.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Skiing and hiking on Vitosha Mountain — the mountain rises just south of the city and is easily reached by public bus. Day trips for winter skiing or summer hiking offer panoramic views over the capital.
  • Catch a football match — the city is home to several top-tier clubs including CSKA Sofia, Levski Sofia, and Slavia Sofia. The Vasil Levski National Stadium hosts international games as well.
  • Explore Sofia’s nightlife — two main clusters, the city center and Studentski grad (Student’s Town), offer everything from chalga clubs to rock venues and EDM parties. Many clubs don’t get busy until after 23:00.
  • Refill at the public mineral springs — the city was founded for its thermal waters, and free drinking fountains are scattered across the center, including a popular cluster near the Sofia History Museum.
  • Relax in a park or garden — in warm months, locals spill into Crystal Garden and the lawns around the National Theater with drinks in hand, creating a casual, open-air social scene.

  • The Boyana Church — a UNESCO World Heritage site on the outskirts of the city, known for its well-preserved medieval frescos.
  • The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world and a defining symbol of the city skyline.
  • The "triangle of religious tolerance" — within two blocks, you can visit an Orthodox church, a mosque, and a synagogue, reflecting centuries of cohabitation.
  • Monumental communist-era architecture — Stalinist Gothic public buildings and concrete tower blocks tell the story of Sofia’s post-war transformation.

  • May to September — the widest travel window, with warm days around 28°C, long sunshine hours, and low rainfall. Ideal for city sightseeing and Vitosha hikes.
  • Late spring (May–June) — pleasant temperatures before peak summer crowds, fewer tourists, and green parks in full bloom.
  • Early autumn (September) — still warm and mostly dry, with the added bonus of late-season mountain trips and fewer visitors than in July–August.
  • Winter (December–March) — cold and snowy, but perfect for a short ski-break on Vitosha; city sights are quieter and hotels often offer lower rates.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Use contactless payments on transit — metro gates and bus validators accept bank cards and Apple/Google Pay, which is often simpler than buying paper tickets as a visitor.
  • Book airport taxis through the official desk or app — OK Supertrans is the contracted operator; avoid touts and non-contracted taxis with fake logos outside the terminal.
  • Choose accommodation strategically — staying near a metro station, especially along the Yellow Line to the airport, saves time and makes getting around easier.
  • Pack layers in spring and autumn — transitional seasons can bring sharp temperature swings and occasional rain, so a light jacket and waterproof layer will get used.
