About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Smolensk is one of Russia’s oldest cities, with a history stretching back to the ninth century. It has been claimed by different powers more often than almost anywhere else in the country, and that layered past shows in its architecture — from the vast Kremlin fortress to pre-Mongol churches and 18th‑ and 19th‑century streetscapes.

The city centre is compact and walkable, sloping over surprisingly hilly terrain. Wars have left their marks, and not every monument survives intact, but the mix of eras gives Smolensk a distinct, hard‑to‑pin‑down character that stays with visitors.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Arrive by train — direct services from Moscow take 5–6 hours, and some international routes pass through in summer, making rail the most straightforward option.
  • Walk when you can — the centre rewards pedestrians; outside it, be ready for long stretches without crossings and hilly streets.
  • Carry cash for transport — bus and taxi fares are often paid directly to the driver, so keep small ruble notes handy.
  • Check seasonal timetables — intercity bus schedules to places like Berlin, Warsaw or Riga change frequently, so reconfirm before departure.
