About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Centar is the beating heart of modern Skopje, where political institutions, neoclassical facades, and cultural venues converge along the Vardar River's south bank. For centuries this bank housed the city's Christian quarter, setting it apart from the Ottoman-era Stara Čaršija across the water. A devastating 1963 earthquake erased most of its historic architecture, but a bold 21st-century makeover has filled the district with Baroque-style buildings, museums, and countless monuments. The result is a visually rich, walkable center that surprises first-time visitors with its dramatic urban transformation.
