About this place
Skardu, the capital of the Baltistan region in Gilgit-Baltistan, sits at an elevation of 2,438 meters amid the dramatic peaks of the Karakoram range. Often called "Little Tibet," the area shares a deep cultural and architectural resemblance with Tibet, shaped by a blend of Tibetan and Caucasian heritage and the ancient Balti language still spoken today. The town is famously the gateway to some of the world's highest mountains, including K2, and is surrounded by fertile valleys known for their orchards.
The landscape is one of stark, breathtaking contrasts: glacial lakes with crystal-clear turquoise water, irrigated terraced fields, and fruit-laden orchards against a backdrop of rugged monoliths and snow-capped summits. Whether as a launchpad for high-altitude trekking expeditions or a destination to explore unique local culture and serene natural beauty, Skardu offers a distinct and memorable adventure.
