About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Sivas is a high-altitude city in Central Anatolia, standing at 1,278 meters on a broad plain. It is a major transport hub, with high-speed rail connections to Ankara and onward routes to eastern Turkey. The city blends an industrial, agricultural character with a remarkable collection of 13th-century Seljuk architecture, including several ornate madrasas that rival each other in splendor.

Historically significant as the site of the 1919 congress where Atatürk launched the War of Independence, Sivas today serves as a practical and intriguing stopover. Winters are bitterly cold and snowy, while summers, though hot and dry, can bring chilly nights — carrying a layer is wise in any season.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Use the high-speed train — YHT services from Ankara take just 2.5 hours and run three times daily; booking online through TCDD is straightforward.
  • Factor in connection gaps — Despite the fast YHT line, seamless connections to eastern cities remain limited; plan for potential waits when continuing journeys.
  • Navigate by town bus — Routes 1-A through 2-B pass the train station, while most other lines reach the coach station, making bus travel a practical way to reach key sights and bridges.
  • Budget for taxi rides — In 2022, figure on about 30 TL from the railway station to the center, 40 TL from the bus station, and 250 TL from the airport.
  • Do not rely on train buffets — Conventional long-distance trains may carry a buffet car, but supplies are unreliable; bring your own food and water.
