About this place
Sikasso is Mali's second-largest city, set in the fertile south about 375 km from Bamako. Once the proud capital of the Kénédougou Kingdom, the city still carries a sense of its historic role, though it was later absorbed into the French colonial empire. Today it is a bustling regional hub of around 230,000 people, just a short drive from the borders with Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire.
Thanks to a subtropical climate, Sikasso enjoys a green landscape and a steady supply of fresh fruit and vegetables year-round — a pleasant contrast to the drier picture many travelers have of Mali.
