About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Shymkent is a city of layers in southern Kazakhstan, where a history stretching back 25 centuries is packed into a single walkable kilometer. Its name, combining "clay" and "city," hints at the ancient adobe settlements and the hillfort that has anchored life here for millennia. From its origins as a Silk Road oasis near Sayram, the city transformed into a major hub when the railway arrived and later grew explosively during the Soviet era after World War II, becoming a crucial industrial center. Today, Shymkent is a bustling metropolis that has tripled in size since independence, known across Kazakhstan as a vibrant gastronomic capital where eating and drinking are at the heart of daily life.

The city's star-shaped layout visually orients around its central hillfort, with a fascinating journey leading from the grand, rectangular Soviet architecture of Al-Faraby Square through the winding medieval streets of the old town to the top of the ancient citadel. Beyond its historical core, Shymkent offers a youthful energy centered around modern malls like Mega Planet, lively bazaars, and large-scale cultural events. As the third largest city in Kazakhstan, it blends its rich past with a dynamic present, offering visitors a genuine taste of Kazakh culture and urban life.
