About this place
Serampore (also spelled Shrirampur) is a historic town on the western bank of the Hooghly River in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. It stands out as one of India’s rare former Danish colonies, once known as Frederiksnagore. Today, its lanes and riverfront blend Bengali tradition with traces of Danish and British influence — a quiet, layered stop for travelers who enjoy history beyond the usual circuit.
The town is most famous for the Serampore Trio — William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward — three English missionaries who shaped early 19th‑century Bengal through printing, education, and social reform. Visitors come to see the old mission buildings and understand how this small riverbank settlement became the birthplace of Bengali prose publishing.
