About this place
Sholapur (Solapur) is a historic trading city straddling the plains of southern Maharashtra, long prized as a crossroads between Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Known for its durable cotton bedsheets and handloom traditions, the city carries a commercial energy rooted in centuries of textile and agricultural trade.
Legends trace the name to sixteen founding villages, while its layered past spans Chalukya, Yadav, Bahamani, and Bijapur rule. Today, that history shows up in Bhui-Kot Castle, a 15th-century fortification, and in the many Jain temples scattered through city neighborhoods.
