About this place

Shiyan (十堰 Shíyàn) is a city in Northwest Hubei Province, central China. Best known as the gateway to the famed Wudang Mountains — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important centers of Taoism in China — Shiyan offers travelers a blend of spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and a glimpse into traditional Chinese martial arts culture.

The city itself provides a practical base for exploring the nearby mountain region, with local transport connections that make accessing the Wudang scenic area straightforward. While Shiyan is an industrial urban center, its real draw lies in the mountain landscapes, ancient temples, and the opportunity to study or observe Wudang Kung Fu in its birthplace.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Getting to Wudang Mountain from the train station – Take the Green Express bus from outside the station, or the local bus on the main street heading east. The final stop is marked by a line of taxis and a big white gate.
  • Negotiate taxi fares – Taxis from the train station to the mountain gate may initially quote ¥60, but can often be negotiated down to ¥30 or even ¥10.
  • From Shiyan City – A bus to Wudang Mountain costs about ¥10. Ask for directions using the phrase "wo yao qu wudangshan" (I want to go to Wudang Mountain).
  • Budget accommodation – Book in advance at the Wudang Hostel for dorm beds (¥40) or bring a tent (¥10 camping fee) for the most affordable stay.
  • Plan for the hike – The budget hostel is on an abandoned temple ground along a hiking trail; be prepared for a long uphill walk.
  • Sample local food – Don't miss local dishes like Gexian Rice Vinegar, Lao You Bing, and Gexian Mountain Roast Duck for an authentic taste of the region.
