About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Shimonoseki sits at the western tip of Honshu, guarding the Kanmon Straits that separate Japan's main island from Kyushu. The city's strategic position has made it a stage for pivotal moments in Japanese history — from the 12th-century Battle of Dan-no-ura to the 19th-century Bombardment of Shimonoseki and the signing of the treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895. Today, it faces Kitakyushu across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

Beyond its historical weight, Shimonoseki is famed as the culinary home of fugu (pufferfish), attracting adventurous eaters to sample this potentially lethal delicacy prepared by licensed chefs. Inland, the well-preserved castle town and samurai quarter of Chofu offers a quieter, atmospheric contrast to the bustling international port.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Sample fugu at the source — Join culinary daredevils at a licensed restaurant for thinly sliced sashimi, hot-pot stew, or fried pufferfish. Set meals can be found near Kanmon Wharf or Karato Pier.
  • Walk the Kanmon Straits — A pedestrian tunnel lets you stroll under the sea to Moji in about fifteen minutes, with roughly 780 meters below the seabed. Access is free and photo-worthy.
  • Soak in a local hot spring — Several hot spring resorts are dotted around town, though most require a car or taxi to reach and sit well off the main tourist track.
  • Catch the Little Busan Fest — Every November at Green Mall, this festival celebrates the city's Korean community and culture.
  • Honor local baseball roots — Pick up a Yokohama BayStars jersey noting the team's birthplace in Shimonoseki, a point of pride for longtime fans.

  • Karato waterfront at night — Meiji-era foreign buildings stand alongside modern ferroconcrete structures, illuminated after dark in a striking coastal blend.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive via Kyushu — Long-distance bullet-train travelers typically ride to Kokura and then backtrack on the San'yo Main Line, a smoother approach than direct connections.
  • Use city buses for Chofu — Sanden Kotsu buses serve both major train stations and the port area; a short ride delivers you to the Matsubara or Joka-machi stops near the samurai quarter.
  • Carry cash for small purchases — Short bus hops cost only ¥170, and local food courts and casual fugu sets are budget-friendly but may not accept cards.
