About this place
Shikarpur is a historic trading city in Sindh province, situated about 29 km west of the Indus River and 37 km north-west of Sukkur. Once considered a financial capital for both South and Central Asia, it carries a legacy of commerce that dates back to the Kalhora period. The city's origin is debated — some associate its name with the hunting pastimes of the Talpur Mirs, while others trace it to a much older settlement meaning "town founded by the vanquisher of the Shakas." Today Shikarpur remains a modest regional centre with a population of around 200,000.
