About this place
Shihezi is a remarkably green city rising from the Junggar desert in northern Xinjiang Province. Built from 1954 onward, it has earned a reputation for having more trees per acre than any other city in China. This planned oasis is a quiet, friendly place that sees very few international travelers, offering a unique glimpse into modern life on the historical Silk Road.
The city is compact and very walkable, except during the harsh winter months. A standout feature is the stunning backdrop of mountains rising to nearly 5,000 meters, providing a dramatic contrast to the urban greenery and desert surroundings.
