About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Shibuya is Tokyo's pulsing youth-culture epicenter, centered on the iconic five-way Shibuya Crossing and its giant video screens. Northwest of the station, a dense knot of shopping streets — Center-gai, Kōen-dōri, Dōgenzaka — fills with fashion boutiques, music shops, and eateries that stay lively well into the night.

The ward also holds quieter corners: tiny bars tucked into Nonbei-yokochō (Drinker Alley), the tree-lined approach to Yoyogi Park, and the upscale pockets of Ebisu. It's a compact, walkable base with swift train connections to Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Yokohama.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Cross Shibuya Scramble — Join the flood of pedestrians at the five-way crossing right outside the station's Hachikō exit; the surrounding video screens make it a spectacle.
  • Walk Dōgenzaka and Center-gai — These two main drags are lined with fashion flagships, arcades, and tiny eateries where Tokyo's youth trends take shape.
  • Visit Nonbei-yokochō — Duck into this narrow 'drinker alley' just north of the Yamanote tracks for yakitori counters and miniature bars that have operated since the 1950s.
  • Catch a film — Several movie theaters sit within walking distance of the station, showing both Japanese blockbusters and international releases.
  • Browse electronics and music gear — A cluster of shops southwest of the JR station sells new and used instruments; for headphones and gadgets, the big electronics stores are nearby.

  • Late April to early June — The most comfortable weather window: warm but not yet steamy, with light rain and plenty of daylight.
  • Autumn (October–November) — Mild temperatures and clearer skies; the summer crowds have thinned, and the city's parks offer fall color.
  • Weekday afternoons — To experience the energy of Shibuya without peak human gridlock, arrive on a Tuesday or Wednesday before the after-work rush.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Exit via Hachikō — Use the Hachikō exit at Shibuya Station to get your bearings; the statue, crossing, and main shopping streets are immediately visible.
  • Budget flights via Keisei — From Narita Airport, the regular Keisei limited express to Nippori and the Yamanote Line costs about ¥1,230 and takes roughly two hours.
  • Pack light for shopping — With dozens of stores and a lively second-hand music scene, you'll want extra bag space and a plan for getting purchases back to your lodging.
  • Book hotels early — Shibuya's room stock is small; secure accommodations well ahead, or consider staying in nearby Shinjuku or Ebisu and riding one stop on the Yamanote Line.
