About this place

Shenyang (沈阳 Shěnyáng), historically known as Mukden in the Manchu language, is the capital of Liaoning Province and the largest city in Northeast China. This bustling metropolis is deeply steeped in history, serving as the birthplace of the Qing dynasty. Visitors can explore the Shenyang Imperial Palace and the first two imperial tombs of the Qing Dynasty — Fuling Tomb (Nurhaci) and Zhaoling Tomb (Hong Taiji) — all recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city also played a pivotal role in 20th-century geopolitics as the home of warlord Zhang Zuolin and the stage for the Mukden Incident of 1931.

Today, Shenyang balances its rich historical legacy with rapid modernization. It developed into a major industrial center during the 20th century and now features large-scale contemporary construction alongside its ancient landmarks. The city's location in Liaoning Province gives it a unique cultural flavor — its cuisine, known as Liaocai (辽菜), is distinctive for its bold flavors heavy on garlic and ginger, and the city boasts large Korean and Mongolian communities that add to its vibrant food scene, particularly at lively night markets like 彩电塔 Cai Dian Ta near the Liaoning Radio Tower.

For leisure travelers, Shenyang offers a compelling blend of imperial history, dynamic urban exploration, and authentic Northeast Chinese culture, all supported by convenient transportation links via air, high-speed rail, and expressways from major Chinese cities like Beijing and Dalian.
