About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Sharjah is the third-largest city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Sharjah emirate. Known as the cultural and literary hub of the UAE, the city offers a distinctly Arabic and Islamic atmosphere with its Umayyad and Abbasid-inspired architecture, museums, libraries, and cultural centers. Unlike neighboring Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah provides a more conservative and family-friendly environment, with a strong focus on heritage, art, and local traditions.

The emirate is geographically diverse, with coastlines on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, as well as exclaves like Kalba, Khor Fakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn. The city is closely connected to Dubai and Ajman as part of a larger metropolitan area, making it a popular residential choice for those who work in Dubai. Its public buildings — all designed by the present ruler, a qualified architect — lend a cohesive, cultured feel to the urban landscape.

Sharjah also offers a range of attractions, from heritage and art areas to bustling souqs, mosques, and lagoon-side activities. Its festivals and date-season celebrations offer visitors a deeper look into Emirati and Arab culture.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
 • Getting there — The closest major airport is Sharjah International Airport, reachable from Al Jubail Bus Station (20 km) via 24/7 buses (8 dirham, cash only). Alternatively, inter-emirate buses from Dubai cost 12 dirham (nol card required) and stop near the Central Souk.
 • Getting around by bus — Use the Sayer card (available from bus drivers for 50 dirham, includes 45 dirham credit) for local routes. Note that intra-city bus schedules are not on Google Maps; refer to the Mowasalat network map instead.
 • Taxis vs. ride-shares — Standard taxis (with reflective green plates) are generally cheaper than Uber or Careem. Flag fall is 3.50 dirham, then 1 dirham every 650 m; minimum fare 11.50 dirham. There's a 20 dirham surcharge to cross into Dubai.
 • Walking limitations — The E11 highway separates parts of the city; plan crossings using designated bridges or underpasses, which can be up to 1 km apart.
 • Respect local customs — Sharjah is more conservative than Dubai. Dress modestly, especially in heritage areas and souqs, and be aware that some museum and heritage site hours are reserved exclusively for women.
 • Alcohol rules — Do not attempt to buy or consume alcohol in public; it is only permitted at the airport's duty-free and with a personal license for home consumption. Transporting alcohol through Sharjah to a legal destination is allowed, but verify current regulations.
 • Visa requirements — For entry requirements, consult the United Arab Emirates visa policies before traveling. The Etihad Rail national railway system is under development and expected to start in 2026, offering another travel option.
