About this place

Last updated Jun 20, 2026

Shangqiu is a city in eastern Henan province whose story reaches back more than 4,000 years, making it one of China’s most historically layered destinations. It served as the first capital of the Shang Dynasty and later as capital to the states of Song and Liang, as well as the southern capital of the Northern Song Dynasty under the name Nanjing. Today the city is a significant regional railway hub, connecting travelers to nearly every major city in China.

Modern Shangqiu is also an important agricultural and industrial center, known for wheat, corn, cotton, and pears, alongside wine, refrigerators, aluminum, and electric bicycles. Culturally the city shares more with the surrounding Huaihai region—a crossroads of eastern Henan, southwest Shandong, northern Jiangsu, and northern Anhui—than with the rest of Henan Province.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 20, 2026
  • Check your train station — Confirm whether you’re arriving at or departing from Shangqiu Railway Station or the other station, as they are 8 km apart and a misstep adds 30+ minutes.
  • Use city buses or shared bikes — Most bus routes pass through the main railway station, making it the default transfer hub; shared bicycles are also widely available downtown.
  • Focus on spring or autumn — Aligning your visit with these seasons means more comfortable weather and better conditions for visiting the academy and the Song dynasty ruins.
