About this place
Sfax is a major port city on Tunisia’s east coast, roughly midway between Tunis and the Libyan border. It serves as the gateway to the Kerkennah Islands and offers a glimpse of Tunisian urban life that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. The city is anchored by its historic medina, where traditional commerce and daily routines continue much as they have for generations. As a regional center with a population of over 280,000, Sfax provides solid transport links to northern hubs like Sousse and Tunis, as well as southern destinations including Gabes and the Star Wars filming sites. While it may not be a classic resort destination, Sfax rewards travelers who appreciate an authentic, working city with easy access to coastal escapes and cultural heritage.

Things to Do
- Wander the medina — the compact, logically laid-out old city is a living commercial hub where tourists are few and daily life is the main attraction.
- Day-trip to the Kerkennah Islands — catch one of up to eight daily ferries to walk the beaches near Hotel Cercina, enjoy tea overlooking the bay, or trek roughly 1½ km to the old Bourj and its Roman ruins.
- Explore by louage — ride a shared minibus to nearby cities like El Djem, Sousse, or Tunis for a truly local travel experience; be prepared to wait until the vehicle fills up.
- Visit cultural centres — drop into Dar Siala or Maison de la photographie (Dar Kammoun) for rotating art exhibitions and a taste of Sfax's creative scene.

Things to See
- Sfax medina — a fascinating walled old town where traditional souks, workshops, and family-run businesses carry on with very little tourist-oriented gloss.
- Kerkennah Islands — a quiet offshore escape with beaches, a historic Bourj (fort), and adjacent Roman ruins now open to visitors.
- Dar Siala — a cultural centre and art gallery set in a restored traditional house, offering insight into local heritage and contemporary work.
- Maison de la photographie (Dar Kammoun) — a photography-focused gallery that adds a modern artistic note to the medina's historic lanes.

Best Time to Visit
- Late Aug–Nov — average temperatures around 24.5°C, low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine; an excellent window for medina walks, ferry trips, and longer excursions.
- May–Jun — similar comfort, with average temps near 23.1°C and even less rain; ideal before the peak summer heat arrives.
- Avoid Jul–mid-Aug — peak heat can make sightseeing draining; schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon if traveling then.
- Cooler months — winter is mild but can feel chilly for coastal day-trips; still manageable for exploring the medina and surrounding cities.

Planning Tips
- Get around by taxi — short downtown hops typically cost less than 2 DT; taxis are economical and simpler than navigating irregular, crowded local buses.
- Book train comfort class — the small Confort section on 1st-class coaches guarantees a seat when trains are busy, and the inspector will enforce reservations.
- Ferry timing to Kerkennah — check return schedules carefully and allow enough time for the taxi back; missing the last boat means an unplanned overnight stay.
- Budget stay inside the medina — several basic hotels cluster just inside Bab Diwan; Hotel Besbes is often cited as the most acceptable of these.
- Louage strategy for popular routes — on frequent runs like Sfax–Tunis, the wait is short; if you're in a hurry and only a seat or two remain, offering to pay for the extra seat can speed your departure.
