About this place
Sérres is a pleasant regional capital in central Macedonia, Greece, set in a fertile plain about 70 km northeast of Thessaloniki. The Rodopi Mountains rise to the north and east, while the Strymon River flows through the plain to the south. The city was largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1913, resulting in a modern layout of wide streets, spacious squares, and abundant parks — a distinctive feature that sets it apart from many older Greek towns.
The wooded hill of the Acropolis (Koulas) dominates the northern edge of the city, topped by a ruined castle with panoramic views. Below it, the pine-covered slopes and the valley of Agioi Anargyroi form one of the city's most attractive green spaces, offering walking paths, cafes, and summer nightlife just steps from the centre.

Planning Tips
- Buy local akanes sweets — the city's signature confection, made with fresh goat butter, almonds, and starch, is sold in patisseries around the centre and makes an excellent edible souvenir.
- Follow the seasons for nightlife — in winter the action is on the pedestrian streets of the city centre; in summer head to the Agioi Anargyroi valley for open-air bars and clubs.
- Time your Acropolis walk for late afternoon — the climb is short but exposed; soft evening light makes the views from the Koulas castle particularly rewarding.
