About this place
Serang is the capital of Banten province in Western Java, situated about 75 km west of Jakarta's city centre. With a population of roughly 600,000, it sits at the edge of the vast Jakarta metropolitan sprawl, only about 30 km from Tangerang. While modern Serang has grown significantly, the historically powerful town of Banten, just a short drive north, offers a glimpse into Java's rich past.
The local culture reflects a unique blend of Sundanese and Javanese heritage. Many residents speak a distinctive dialect known as Bahasa Jawa Serang (Jaseng), a Javanese variant similar to the Cirebon dialect. This linguistic history traces back to Javanese migrants who arrived to build the Banten Sultanate in the early 16th century.
