About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, is the largest city in Japan's Tohoku region. Often called the "City of Trees," it offers a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere with wide, tree-lined avenues and a compact, walkable city center. Home to several large universities, the city has a youthful energy and a high standard of education, which contributes to a welcoming environment for international visitors.

The city's history is deeply tied to the feudal lord Date Masamune, who established his capital here in 1600. While much of the historical architecture was lost in the war, Sendai today is celebrated more for its livability, vibrant food scene, and as a gateway to both the mountains and the sea. Its main shopping street, Chūō-dōri, is a covered pedestrian arcade that forms the heart of the city's commercial life.
