Things to Do
- Craft centre on the Mopti road — Housed in a distinctive bright orange mud building, this workshop offers guided tours explaining how bogolan (mud cloth) is made. You can even try creating your own piece, and the on-site shop sells higher-quality work than typical market stalls.
- Waterfront walk to the port — Stroll from the government district along the Niger River to the port. It is a pleasant route that shows daily river life and ends at a working harbor, smaller than Mopti's but full of local character.
- Festival sur le Niger — An annual music and dance festival held in late January or early February that draws performers and visitors from across the region. If your dates align, it is a highlight of Mali's cultural calendar.

- Colonial architecture in the government district — Some of the most impressive buildings in Mali stand here, showcasing the city's colonial heritage. Photography is best avoided as these are active government offices.
- Ségou port — Compact compared to Mopti's bustling harbor, but worth visiting as part of a waterfront walk. It gives a window into the river-based trade that has long sustained the city.

- Late October through February — This is the most comfortable window, with dry days, average temperatures around 25.8°C, and plentiful sunshine. Evenings and early mornings can be cool, dipping to around 11.1°C.
- Late January / early February — Coincides with the Festival sur le Niger, adding music and dance to the already favorable weather. Book accommodation ahead if traveling during the festival.
- Avoid the rainy season — From approximately June onward, rains arrive and conditions become less predictable for outdoor exploration and riverside walks.

- Getting there — Ségou sits about 240 km from Bamako on the main road. Buses between Bamako and Mopti stop here regularly, and river travel to Mopti and Gao is possible, with Wednesdays being the best day to find river transport.
- Getting around town — The center is fully walkable. Taxis are available for outlying hotels and cost roughly CFA 250–500 per trip.
- Festival timing — If visiting for Festival sur le Niger in late January or early February, confirm dates in advance and book rooms early, as the event draws regional crowds.
- Photography caution — Keep cameras pointed away from government buildings. The colonial architecture is striking but photographing official premises is discouraged.
