About this place
Scottsdale blends upscale resort living with a playful nod to the Old West. Part of the greater Phoenix area, it is known for high-end shopping, a sprawling gallery district, and one of the largest malls in the country. Fashion Square Mall anchors the retail scene near downtown, while the Old Town district offers a kitschy, souvenir-filled contrast just east of the galleries.
Beyond the storefronts, Scottsdale surprises with outdoor escapes. Over 200 golf courses draw players year-round, and an extensive network of canals provides car-free paths for walking, jogging, and cycling through the desert landscape.

Things to Do
- Golf — Choose from about 200 area courses. Peak-season green fees (November–April) are high, but summer brings deeply discounted rounds; book an early tee time to beat the worst heat.
- Canal paths — Walk, jog, or bike along miles of canals that cut through the valley. These paved, traffic-free routes offer quiet desert scenery and fresh air.
- Gallery walks — Stroll the extensive arts district west of downtown, where local and international artists display work in a walkable, open-air setting.
- Old Town browsing — While unabashedly touristy, Old Town’s abundance of gift shops and Western-themed storefronts is entertaining for a casual afternoon visit.

- Early summer mornings — June through August can be planned around dawn tee times and morning walks when temperatures are still tolerable.

Planning Tips
- Drive the speed limit — Scottsdale uses extensive photo radar, including intersection cameras, temporary standing boxes, and mobile vehicles. Fines are enforced.
- Stay sun-safe — UV levels are extreme much of the year. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and avoid direct midday sun when possible.
- Never enter flooded roads — Even shallow-looking water can sweep a car away. Arizona’s “Stupid Motorist Law” can leave drivers liable for rescue costs.
- Plan walks around the heat — If you want to explore on foot, pick a compact district and go early. Morning temperatures are often pleasant even in summer.
- Use the free downtown trolley — The trolley runs Monday–Friday and serves key central stops, including the senior center near Granite Reef and McDowell Roads.
