About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Sari is the historic heart of Iran’s lush Mazandaran province, set about 20 km south of the Caspian Sea on the northern slopes of the Elburz mountains. With roots stretching back to the ancient Hyrcania civilization and later the Kingdom of Tabaria, the city has twice served as Iran’s capital within the last four centuries. Today it’s a lively regional center where half a million people live along the Tajan River, blending deep history with a relaxed, green setting.

The city rewards travelers who enjoy mixing urban exploration with nature. You can wander centuries-old tower ruins, admire traditional Mazandarani architecture like the Kolbadi House, and then escape to forest parks, coastal beaches, or the otherworldly travertine terraces at Badab-e Surt. Summer evenings bring a lively local ritual — friends gathering in parks and open spaces to enjoy music, poetry, and meals under pleasant night air, a rarity in Iran.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Badab-e Surt terraces — Hike or hire a ride to these spectacular travertine pools, 100 km south of the city. The terraces resemble Turkey’s Pamukkale, but in a far more remote, quiet setting. Bathing in the pools is prohibited to protect the formations, though you can enjoy the upstream water.
  • Coastal escapes — Several Caspian Sea beaches lie within easy reach, including Farah Abad, Gohar Baran, and Derya Kenar. They're popular for picnics, swimming, and enjoying the seaside atmosphere during warmer months.
  • Forest and lake outings — Zare' Forest Park and Salardareh Forest Park offer shaded walking trails, while Nemashoun Lake, Lak-Dasht Lake, and Soleyman-Tangeh Lake make peaceful spots for an afternoon in nature.
  • Hike the Pol-e-Gardan trail — A scenic hiking route that takes you through green hills and gives you a taste of the region's mountain-backed countryside.
  • Take in the city panorama — Head up Bam-e-Shahr Hill for a sweeping view over Sari's rooftops, river, and the surrounding forested slopes.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Khaneh Kolbadi (Kolbadi House) — This painstakingly restored 125-year-old home resembles a khan’s palace, with thick winter-warming walls, airy summer upper floors, and intricate orosi stained-glass windows designed to disorient mosquitoes.
  • Jameh Mosque — Unusually topped with traditional Mazandarani tiled roofs, the mosque's exterior evokes a medieval fortress, offering a striking contrast to the delicate decoration inside.
  • Resket Tower and Ladjim Tower — Two ancient tomb towers from the Qaran (Karan Pawand) and Dabuyans eras, standing as rare remnants of the Tabarian Kingdom’s dynastic architecture in the countryside.
  • Farah Abad Complex — A sprawling Safavid-era palatial and urban complex that once served as a royal retreat, now an atmospheric archaeological site near the coast.
  • Sari Clock Tower — The city’s central landmark and meeting point, an unmissable symbol of Sari in the middle of the bustling town center.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting around — Taxis are everywhere and affordable; consider registering with the city's telephone taxi service (dial 133) if staying more than a few days, especially for suburban day trips.
  • Badab-e Surt logistics — The 2-km trail from the parking area is steep; a bumpy access road leads there. A few public buses run to nearby Orost village from Kiasar around noon, but a private car is the simplest option.
  • Cash and cards — To avoid carrying large sums, use a tourist debit card from Bank Melli Iran or a gift card from Sepah Bank. Both work at ATMs and shops.
  • Language — English speakers are scattered through the city, but learning a friendly phrase in Mazandarani (Tabarian) like Tie Fieda goes a long way with locals.
  • Accommodation outside the center — Forest-surrounded hotels like Salardarreh and coastal options near Babolsar offer a change of scenery, though resort availability for foreigners can be limited during peak periods.
