About this place
Sapporo is the capital and largest city of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. Unlike many Japanese cities, Sapporo was laid out on a logical grid plan, making navigation refreshingly straightforward. While it lacks the ancient temples and traditional architecture found elsewhere in Japan, it compensates with wide, tree-lined boulevards, a vibrant food scene, and spectacular winter snow that draws visitors from around the world.
The city's population has grown from just seven people in 1857 to nearly two million today, and its relatively young age is reflected in its orderly, modern character. Sapporo is a city of distinct seasons — cool, pleasant summers provide a welcome escape from the heat of southern Japan, while winters bring heavy snowfall that the city embraces with festivals and winter sports. The Sapporo Snow Festival, held each February, is a world-famous celebration of snow and ice sculptures that transforms the city center into a frozen gallery.
Tipping is not customary in Sapporo, as excellent service is standard and charges are usually included in the bill. The city's official multilingual guide site, "Welcome to Sapporo," is a helpful resource for planning your visit.

Planning Tips
- Use the Kitaca smart card for seamless travel on JR trains, subways, buses, and streetcars. It's interchangeable with major smart cards from other regions like Suica, PASMO, and ICOCA.
- Book train seats in advance on the Hayabusa shinkansen and Hokuto limited express, as all seats are reserved.
- Consider the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass (¥35,370 for 6 consecutive days in 2025) if traveling from Tokyo or exploring Hokkaido by train.
- Buy a Traveler SIM card at BIC Camera stores (e.g., in Esta Mall at Sapporo JR Station) for data connectivity; bring your passport.
- Winter visitors: Pack for cold, snowy conditions. The streetcar is especially useful in winter when icy footpaths make walking difficult in southwestern neighborhoods.
- If buying omiyage, Shiroi Koibito ("White Lovers") cookies are the quintessential souvenir, widely available at souvenir stores throughout the city.
