About this place
São Vicente, in São Paulo state's Baixada Santista metro area, holds the distinction of being Brazil's oldest city, founded in 1532. While much of its colonial heritage has faded over the centuries, the city today is primarily a coastal destination known for its beaches and scenic waterfront. It forms a continuous urban area with neighboring Santos.
Historically a dormitory community for port workers, São Vicente remains the most economically modest city in its metro region. Visitor activity concentrates on the southeastern beaches and the relaxed seaside atmosphere, rather than a dense collection of historic landmarks.

Planning Tips
- Base yourself near the beach — middle-class neighborhoods and most visitor services cluster along the southeastern waterfront.
- Combine with Santos — the two cities are conurbated; use Santos for wider dining, shopping, and ferry access while enjoying São Vicente's beaches.
- Be sun-smart — even during the comfortable windows, daytime highs can reach the mid-30s Celsius; carry water, sunscreen, and a hat.
