Santarém sits on the southern bank of the Tapajós River in northern Brazil, roughly halfway between Manaus and Belém. It’s the second-largest city in Pará and a popular stopover for travelers moving along the Amazon waterway. The river journey from Manaus takes about 36 hours, making a few days in Santarém a natural break on longer itineraries. The waterfront offers views of the meeting of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers, with a pleasant promenade for walking and relaxing.
