About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Santa Marta is a lively Caribbean port city on Colombia's northern coast, serving as both a commercial hub and a gateway for beach vacations. The city blends a busy urban waterfront with a compact historic center, where colonial-era streets meet the sea. From the beach, the view stretches west toward dramatic sunsets and a rocky island offshore, while the working port sits tucked behind another massive rock to the north.

The main tourist draws extend beyond the old town. El Rodadero, to the south, caters to well-heeled Colombian visitors with high-end hotels and private clubs, and Taganga, a former fishing village to the north, is a backpacker favorite packed with dive shops. Santa Marta also serves as the launch point for one of South America's most celebrated multi-day treks — the hike to the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida).

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Lost City trek (Ciudad Perdida) — The marquee adventure is a 4–5 day jungle hike to the ancient Tayrona ruins, covering roughly 44 mm of steep, humid terrain. Independent hiking isn't allowed; book directly with one of the four authorized operators in Santa Marta.
  • Scuba diving in Taganga — The former fishing village is packed with dive agencies offering trips to nearby reefs and calm, clear bays popular with the backpacker crowd.
  • Beach days at El Rodadero — This southern suburb pairs a long beach with high-end hotels and private clubs, making it a go‑to for swimming, sunbathing, and people-watching.
  • Plane-spotting at the airport beach — Swim in the sea while watching aircraft come and go from the runway just next to the shoreline — an unusual and memorable experience.
  • Mamancana Nature Reserve — A private game reserve where visitors can go wall climbing and canopying amid dry tropical forest.

  • December to April for drier skies — This period brings more sunshine, lower rainfall, and the most reliable conditions for the Lost City trek.
  • Mid-December to late January for festive energy — The city buzzes with Colombian vacationers; book well ahead if visiting during this peak window.
  • July–August as a secondary trek window — A shorter dry spell that still works well for hiking, with somewhat thinner crowds than the winter high season.
  • Optimal trek timing — The driest months (December–March and July–August) offer the most comfortable trail conditions for the 4–5 day Ciudad Perdida hike.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Carry water constantly — The tropical heat is relentless; keep a bottle with you.
  • Book the Lost City trek locally — Going directly through one of Santa Marta's four authorized operators costs significantly less than international resellers.
  • Use the public buses for Rodadero, not the pedestrian path — cheap blue buses and taxis are safer than the isolated walkway connecting the city to Rodadero.
  • Consider flying into Barranquilla — Better flight times or lower fares may be available, with a 2‑hour bus connection to Santa Marta.
  • Negotiate taxi prices upfront — Santa Marta taxis don't use meters; agree on a fare before getting in.
