About this place
Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the largest city in Bolivia and the heart of the country's second-most populous metropolitan area. Located near the geographic center of Bolivia at an altitude of just 416 meters, it offers a distinctly tropical climate that contrasts sharply with the high-altitude chill of La Paz. Once a remote and impoverished settlement for its first 400 years, Santa Cruz has transformed into a booming economic powerhouse — one of the fastest-growing cities in South America — thanks to improved road connections and oil revenues. Today, it blends modern energy, lush tropical landscapes, and a welcoming lowland culture that draws travelers exploring Bolivia's eastern lowlands, Amazonian waterways, and Jesuit mission routes.
Visitors will find a dynamic city with leafy boulevards, bustling plazas, and a lively food and nightlife scene. The city is also a practical gateway for excursions to nearby natural attractions like Amboró National Park, Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, and the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos. Whether you're here to enjoy local cuisine, explore the riverfront, or launch an Amazon river trip, Santa Cruz offers a warm and vibrant entry point to Bolivia's less-visited eastern half.

Planning Tips

- Ride-hailing — Uber and InDriver operate in Santa Cruz. InDriver lets you set your own fare; both offer a good alternative to street taxis.
- Money — ATMs and exchange houses are widely available. Avoid trying to exchange currency during Carnival, when it's almost impossible.
- Safety — Stay within the first four rings of the city. Avoid political demonstrations. Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps after dark.
- Packing — Light, breathable clothing for daytime; a light jacket or sweater for surazo nights (June–August). Rain gear if visiting in the wet season. Insect repellent is essential for trips outside the city.
- Excursions — Book tours to Amboró, Noel Kempff, and Jesuit Missions through reputable agencies in town. Allow 2–4 days for most trips to the parks.
