About this place
Sanmenxia sits on the southern bank of the Yellow River in western Henan, where legend says the great Yu split the mountains into three dramatic gorges — the Human Gate, God Gate, and Ghost Gate. With a history stretching back thousands of years, the region cradled early Chinese civilization and is recognized as the birthplace of Yangshao Culture, a Neolithic society known for its distinct painted pottery.
Today the city draws visitors with a mix of ancient heritage and natural drama. History enthusiasts come to trace the roots of Taoism — Laozi composed the Dao De Jing here — and to explore sites from the Guo State and the Warring States period.
