About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, sits in the “Valle de las Hamacas” at the foot of its namesake volcano. As the country’s transportation hub with a central location, it’s a natural base for exploring the rest of the nation. The city itself rewards a few days of exploration with its mix of cosmopolitan energy, wide boulevards, and friendly, though city-reserved, locals.

Wealthy suburbs like Colonia Escalon and Zona Rosa feature tree-lined avenues, Central America’s largest malls, and a vibrant dining and nightlife scene. At the same time, the city’s long history is visible in restored landmarks and museums that tell the story of El Salvador from its pre-Columbian roots to the present day.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Negotiate taxi fares upfront and carry exact change—drivers may not have change or expect the difference as a tip.
  • Use hotel-approved taxis or rideshares — major hotels vet drivers for safety, which is advisable for visitors unfamiliar with the city.
  • Stay in central tourist zones like Zona Rosa and Colonia Escalon for the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and secure environments.
  • Prepare a departure tax — a fee of up to US$32 may be required when flying out, though it is sometimes included in the ticket price.
  • Shop local markets for handicrafts — the Ilopango markets and Mercado Cuartel are good places to bargain for hammocks, souvenirs, and handmade goods.
