About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

San Pablo is a compact city in Laguna province, home to about 265,000 people and best known for its seven lakes. Its volcanic soil has long supported coconut farming, and since gaining its city charter in 1940, it has become one of the oldest legally designated cities in the Philippines. The city also serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo.

Set at a higher elevation than most of Laguna and surrounded by forested hills and volcanic peaks, San Pablo enjoys a relatively cooler climate. On clear days, you can catch views of Mount Makiling, Mount Banahaw, and other nearby mountains. Downtown clusters around Sampaloc Lake, with civic buildings, the cathedral, and the main commercial strip along Jose Rizal Avenue.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Heritage buildings along Jose Rizal Avenue — the boulevard retains original lamp posts, traffic islands, and a colonnaded footbridge, with many American-period structures concentrated around the Capital Compound and Plaza Rizal.
  • San Pablo Cathedral and Plaza Rizal — the cathedral anchors the eastern end of the main avenue and sits beside a key junction in the city center.
  • Seven Lakes — these volcanic lakes define San Pablo; Sampaloc Lake, the largest, lies right at the edge of downtown near the city hall.

Planning Tips

  • Getting there by road — from Manila, the fastest route uses the STAR Tollway to Santo Tomas exit, then Maharlika Highway through Alaminos to San Pablo.
  • Public transport — tricycles and jeepneys are the main way to move between the city center and outlying barangays.
  • Local specialties — try San Pablo's buko pie, espasol, kesong puti, and tamarind sweets.
  • Petty crime awareness — as in other Philippine population centers, remain mindful of petty theft and occasional robbery.
