About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

San Francisco’s SoMa (South of Market) district is a dynamic patchwork of urban reinvention. Once dominated by warehouses, the neighborhood has transformed into a hub for modern condos, tech offices, and a vibrant nightlife and arts scene. Its eastern edge blends seamlessly with the Financial District, while the western blocks retain a grittier, low‑rise character where some of SoMa’s most interesting finds are tucked away.

This is where you’ll encounter many of the city’s newest attractions — striking museums, the expansive Moscone Center, and Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. The ballpark alone has accelerated the area’s gentrification, drawing crowds to its waterfront setting and helping reshape the streets around it into a mix of sleek storefronts and converted live‑work spaces.

Getting here is easy: the Bay Bridge empties right into SoMa, and the district serves as a major transit crossroads with Caltrain, Muni Metro, BART, and long‑distance buses all converging within its borders.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Transit first — Caltrain terminates at 4th & King, steps from Oracle Park; Muni and BART lines run under Market Street on the district’s western edge.
  • Ride the F‑Line — The historic streetcar runs along Market Street and connects SoMa with the Castro, the Ferry Building, and Fisherman’s Wharf.
  • Bus options everywhere — Muni routes 10, 12, 30, 45, and 47 connect from northern neighborhoods, while routes 9, 14, and 27 come up from the Mission.
  • Giants game ferries — Special ferry service from Larkspur, Alameda, Oakland, and Vallejo runs directly to Oracle Park on game days.
  • Bay Bridge exits — Coming from the East Bay, take the Fremont/Folsom, 5th Street, or 8th Street exits to drop straight into SoMa.
