About this place
Samarinda is the capital of East Kalimantan, situated on the eastern side of Borneo about 60 km from the Makassar Strait. It serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the region while offering a distinctive mix of urban and riverside life.
The city is connected by air and a two-hour bus ride from Balikpapan, making it fairly approachable for visitors arriving from elsewhere in Indonesia. A notable stop for travelers is the Samarinda Botanical Garden (Taman Borneo), amongst the largest in East Borneo, which adds a lush, green dimension to the city’s landscape.

Planning Tips
- Airport bus Route 2 — the most useful option for visitors, running down Bhayangkara Road to Sungai Kunjang Station, taking 90 minutes. It operates hourly from 06:00 to 17:00 and costs $3.
- Use licensed taxis — look for GrabAirport, Yellow (Aerocab), White (Angkasa), Kilat, Red (Sentra), or Blue (Primkopau) taxis. Avoid unlicensed operators as they charge significantly more.
- Try local snacks at the airport — a cafe near Indomaret serves traditional Samarinda Roti Durian, made with distinctive Melak durian, and local fish crackers (amplang).
