About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Samara is a sprawling cultural and industrial hub on the Volga River, known as the sixth-largest city in Russia and the capital of its eponymous region. Home to over a million residents, it carries a layered history that stretches back long before its official founding as a fortress in 1586.

This river port gained special prominence during World War II when it became the country's reserve capital, with government operations evacuated here away from the conflict zone. That period, along with later oil-boom growth, helped shape its modern character. The city has also long attracted creative minds like writers Tolstoy and Gorky, as well as painters Repin and Aivazovsky.
