About this place

Last updated Jul 20, 2026

Salt Lake City is Utah's capital and its largest urban hub, set between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. The city blends a rich pioneer history with a thriving outdoor-recreation scene, making it a practical base for skiing, hiking, and exploring the broader Wasatch Front. Over a million people live in the metro area, while about 200,000 reside within the city limits.

Downtown's grid radiates from Temple Square, the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the state's most-visited tourist site. Distinct neighborhoods like the funky Sugar House, historic Avenues, and the University district each offer their own personality. Although the city is less than 50 percent LDS today, its Mormon heritage remains visible in architecture, culture, and annual events.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 20, 2026
  • Ski the Wasatch resorts — Several world-class ski areas in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are a short drive from downtown, famed for light, powdery snow. The 2002 Winter Olympics venue in Park City is about 40 minutes away via I-80.
  • Bike City Creek Canyon — The paved road is closed to cars on odd-numbered days from late May through September, and car-free the rest of the year. The 7-mile climb gains about 1,300 feet past picnic sites and the city's historic water source.
  • Hike the Bonneville Shoreline Trail — Partially complete, this multi-use trail network follows the ancient lakeshore along the Wasatch foothills, offering trail running, mountain biking, and hiking minutes from downtown neighborhoods.
  • Explore the Great Salt Lake — Sail, kayak, or birdwatch from the marina at I-80 Exit 104. Antelope Island State Park harbors a wild bison herd and a large pelican colony on its rocky cliffs.
  • Join the 999 Ride — Every Thursday evening, this inclusive, slow-casual group bike ride departs the 9th & 9th area and winds through local streets, often attracting over 100 cyclists in warmer months.
  • Catch a college sports event — The University of Utah Utes compete in the Big 12 Conference. The women's gymnastics team, known as the Red Rocks, draws some of the largest crowds in U.S. women's sports.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 20, 2026
  • Temple Square — Utah's top tourist attraction anchors downtown with LDS Church headquarters, the domed Tabernacle (home of the Tabernacle Choir), public gardens, and free tours in dozens of languages. Note that most of the square is undergoing major renovations through late 2026.
  • Utah State Capitol — Perched on Capitol Hill north of downtown, the building overlooks the city and sits near the quirky Marmalade District's unusual architecture.
  • University of Utah campus — The sprawling east-bench campus includes the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Kingsbury Hall for touring performances, and the adjacent Red Butte Garden and Arboretum.
  • Beehive House & historic buildings — On the southeast corner of Temple Square, Brigham Young's former residence offers free guided tours. Nearby, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building has public observation decks and genealogical research computers.
  • Downtown gallery stroll — On the third Friday of each month, galleries and antique shops around 200 East and 300 South open their doors for a free evening walk, showcasing the local art scene.

  • Mid-May to early October — The broadest travel window offers warm, dry conditions with average highs around 21.8°C and low precipitation, ideal for hiking, biking, and city exploring.
  • Late September to mid-October — Autumn delivers comfortable temperatures, brilliant mountain foliage, and fewer crowds than summer. Pacific storms begin mid-October but are still infrequent.
  • Winter for skiers (mid-November to early March) — Snowfall is reliable at the resorts, and UTA ski buses make car-free access practical. City tourism is quiet, though valley inversions require caution for those with respiratory conditions.
  • Avoid early spring if hiking is a priority — March and April can be rainy and windy, and high-country snowpack keeps many trails muddy or closed until late May or June, though ski resorts often operate through mid-April.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 20, 2026
  • Use TRAX from the airport — The Green Line light-rail connects the terminal to downtown in about 20 minutes. A $5 day pass also covers buses, including winter ski routes.
  • Understand the address grid — Streets radiate from Temple Square. "500 East" is five blocks east of the center; building numbers show the position between cross streets. Temple Square is currently under renovation through late 2026, so check what is open before visiting.
  • Watch for winter inversions — If you have asthma or other lung conditions, monitor air-quality reports and consider staying at higher-elevation ski resorts when valley pollution spikes.
  • Pack layers for the mountains — Even in summer, canyon and high-elevation temperatures can be significantly cooler than the valley, with afternoon thunderstorms common from mid-July through mid-September.
  • Sample local fry sauce — A Utah-born condiment of ketchup and mayonnaise appears at nearly every burger spot and drive-thru; even national chains stock it locally.
