About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Salatiga is a small, welcoming town in Central Java, Indonesia, perched at the foot of Mount Merbabu and Mount Telomoyo. Once called the most beautiful town in Central Java by the Dutch, it retains a relaxed, cool-weather charm. Its reputation as one of Indonesia’s most tolerant cities is bolstered by a diverse student population attending Satya Wacana Christian University.

The compact center is easily explored on foot or by angkota (minivan). While lacking major tourist draws, Salatiga makes a pleasant stopover between Semarang and Solo, offering simple local eats, a modest market scene, and easy access to the highlands around Kopeng.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Get a local SIM card — Ride-hailing apps like GoJek and Grab work here, but drivers often call for precise pickup details; basic Indonesian is very helpful.
  • Use Bawen exit when driving — If arriving from Semarang via the toll road, exit at Bawen, as the Salatiga exit sits too far south of the center.
  • Carry cash in small denominations — Angkota fares and many local eateries operate on cash only.
  • Base yourself for Merbabu — For trekking, consider staying near Kopeng rather than central Salatiga for easier access.
