About this place
Salalah is the capital of Oman's southern Dhofar region and the country's second-largest city. With a history stretching back two millennia as a key stop on the frankincense and silk trading routes, it served as Oman's capital from 1932 until 1970. The city remains deeply tied to the frankincense trade and is famous for its annual khareef (summer monsoon), which transforms the landscape into lush green and draws visitors escaping the intense heat of the Arabian Peninsula.
Beyond the monsoon season, Salalah serves as an excellent base for exploring the ecologically unique Dhofar region. The old city centers around the seafront Al Haffa district, while the surrounding area offers dramatic coastal scenery, wadis, and historical sites reachable by car.

Things to Do
- Diving — The dry season from October through May offers the only window for exploring underwater sites along the Dhofar coast; conditions are unsuitable during the khareef.
- Bird watching — Optimal from October to May, when migratory species pass through and drier conditions make habitats more accessible.
- Horseback riding — Available in the region and a scenic way to experience the coastal and inland landscapes.
- Explore the wadis — During the khareef (July–August), nearby wadis fill with water and offer lush, green scenery rarely associated with the Arabian Peninsula.

Things to See
- Al Haffa (Hafah) — The old city district on the seafront, home to the traditional souq and frankincense markets that reflect Salalah's centuries-old trading heritage.
- Frankincense souqs — Salalah remains the center of Oman's frankincense trade; visitors can browse several grades of the aromatic resin alongside hand-crafted Dhofari clay incense burners and myrrh.
- Mughsayl beach and blowholes — A dramatic coastal drive west of the city leads to this scenic area with tidal geysers and an ocean-side café.
- City lights from the high-altitude entry — Arriving by road at night from the north treats travelers to a stunning panorama of Salalah's lights from the mountain approach.

Best Time to Visit
- Late January to late March — The most comfortable period, with average temperatures around 23.6°C and clear skies ideal for outdoor exploration.
- July–August for the khareef — The monsoon draws visitors seeking green landscapes and flowing wadis, though hotel rates peak and swimming is not possible.
- September for quieter green scenery — The rains depart along with the crowds, leaving lush vegetation and more affordable accommodations.
- October–May for diving — The dry season provides the only window for underwater activities and optimal bird watching conditions.

Planning Tips
- Book early for khareef — Hotel reservations are essential during July–September, and rental cars (preferably SUVs) should be reserved in advance as agencies run out during peak season.
- Rent an SUV for off-road sights — While a 2WD vehicle is adequate within Salalah, many attractions outside the city require a four-wheel drive, particularly during the rainy season due to slippery terrain.
- Carry cash for road trips — Many petrol stations along the Muscat–Salalah route do not accept credit cards; carrying Omani rials is advisable.
- Negotiate taxi fares upfront — Taxis are unmetered; agree on a price before starting your journey. A typical city ride costs around one rial.
- Avoid swimming in the sea — Strong ocean currents and a steep seabed drop-off make Salalah's beaches unsafe for swimming regardless of experience level; exercise caution near the water.
