About this place
Saki (also spelled Shaki) is one of the oldest settlements in Yoruba land, located in the northern part of Oyo State in western Nigeria. The town sits near the headwaters of the Ofiki River and holds deep historical significance as a refugee settlement after the fall of Old Oyo in 1835. Today it remains a predominantly Yoruba community with a traditional character shaped by centuries of history.
The town offers travelers a look at authentic Yoruba culture away from Nigeria's larger urban centers. A modest grid of local roads connects the area, and visitors move around mostly by taxi or motorcycle. While tourist infrastructure is limited, Saki rewards the curious traveler with a relaxed pace and a strong sense of place.

Planning Tips
- Arrive via Ibadan — Most long-distance buses serve Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. From there, shared taxis complete the roughly 1-hour-50-minute road journey to Saki.
- Hire a local guide or driver — Taxis and motorcycle taxis (okadas) are the main ways to get around. Negotiate fares (roughly ₦250–500 per hour for a taxi) and find a driver who can communicate clearly about places you pass.
- Bring backup power and connectivity — Mobile networks can be unreliable for hours at a time. A power bank and a dual-SIM phone will help if you plan an extended stay.
- Practice street-smart habits — Flashing valuables is discouraged, and it is wise to stick to crowded streets and move in groups, especially after dark. Street beggars are common; a polite but firm response is the local norm.
