About this place
Saint Paul is Minnesota's capital and the smaller, more reserved half of the Twin Cities. Set along a dramatic bend of the Mississippi River, its character was shaped by the riverboat era and the railroads that followed, and that historic infrastructure still defines much of downtown. Today the city mixes landmark government buildings, Victorian-era neighborhoods, and a growing arts and food scene.
The city feels noticeably calmer than neighboring Minneapolis. Its compact, walkable downtown connects to the larger metro area via light rail, and it works well as a base for exploring the region while enjoying a slightly slower pace.

Things to Do
- Ride the METRO Green Line — hop the light rail between downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis, getting a quick cross-section of the Twin Cities along University Avenue.
- Catch a riverboat or festivals — the Mississippi riverfront and Harriet Island draw summer festivals, live music, and seasonal riverboat excursions.
- Take in a show at a historic theater — the performing-arts scene includes grand early‑20th‑century venues that host ballet, opera, touring Broadway, and concerts.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid‑May through early October — the most reliable stretch for comfortable sightseeing, with mild to warm temperatures and manageable rain.
- Late September to early October — early autumn delivers crisp air, fall color along the Mississippi bluffs, and fewer peak‑summer crowds.
- Avoid deep winter if you dislike extreme cold — if sub‑freezing days and heavy snow aren’t your thing, plan for May–October instead.

Planning Tips
- Use the skyways in bad weather — when it’s freezing or stormy, the downtown network of enclosed bridges is the most comfortable way to get around on foot.
- Get a Go‑To card for transit — stored‑value cards and multi‑day passes make the Green Line and buses easy; day passes cost $6 and can be bought on board or at ticket machines.
- Don’t rely on internet cafés — they don’t really exist here, but most coffee shops provide free Wi‑Fi for customers.
- Know your area codes — St. Paul is 651, but local calls to the 612, 763, and 952 codes don’t require a 1 prefix.
