About this place
's-Hertogenbosch, better known as Den Bosch, is a historic city in the southern Netherlands and the capital of North Brabant. Its beautifully preserved medieval center, radiating from the impressive Saint John's Cathedral, is packed with character. Once considered an impregnable fortress and nicknamed "The Swamp Dragon," the city played a pivotal role in Dutch history, and its restored ramparts on the south side earned it the title of European Fortress of the Year in 2004.
Today, the city charms visitors with a network of subterranean canals to explore, intimate shopping streets, and a lively cafe culture. What it may lack in international renown, it more than makes up for with a welcoming, authentic atmosphere and a walkable core that's a joy to discover on foot or by bike.

Planning Tips
- Book Binnendieze ahead — The subterranean canal tour is a highlight but extremely popular; book your tickets in advance at the Bolwerk to avoid disappointment.
- Use a bike or the free bus — The best way to get around the car-free center is by bicycle, or take the free electric city bus from the train station.

- Try a Bossche Bol — Don't leave without sampling the city's famous pastry: a huge chocolate cream puff, best enjoyed with coffee at a local café.
