About this place
Ryazan, the administrative center of Ryazan Oblast, is a city of about 539,000 residents located roughly 200 km southeast of Moscow. While primarily an industrial and transport hub, its long history and cluster of attractions make it a viable weekend escape from the capital. Founded in 1095, the original settlement was destroyed by Mongol forces in 1237, and the city was rebuilt nearby.
As the third-largest city in Central Russia, Ryazan retains a distinctly provincial character. Visitors can explore its modest city center by minibus, bus, or the city's slow but functional trolleybus network. The city is well-connected to Moscow by road and rail, with express trains taking under three hours.
