About this place

Rosetta (Rashid) is a historic port town in Lower Egypt where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. Founded in the 9th century, it flourished after the Ottoman conquest in 1517 as Alexandria declined, becoming a prosperous trading hub known for its distinctive Ottoman-era mansions, citrus groves, and well-kept streets.

During the 19th century the town attracted British travelers drawn by its charm and relative cleanliness. Rosetta is most famous as the place where the Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799, though the stone itself now resides in the British Museum in London. The city center preserves numerous Ottoman houses and public buildings, giving visitors a glimpse into its mercantile past before Alexandria's revival returned the spotlight to its larger neighbor.
