About this place
Rhodes city sits on the northern tip of its namesake island, blending a living medieval core with a modern waterfront. The Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval settlements — roughly 200 unnamed lanes weave past Byzantine churches, Gothic facades, fountains, mosques, and shops, and about 6,000 residents still occupy the same buildings the Knights of St. John used six centuries ago.
The city fans out into four traveler-friendly zones: the walled Old Town; the modern New Town to the north and west; the eastern waterfront with Mandhraki Harbor, the Commercial Harbor, and Elli Beach; and the Acropolis of Rhodes perched on a hill roughly 2 km southwest. This compact layout means most sights are walkable, with buses and taxis filling the gaps.
