About Republic of Malawi
Malawi, known as the "Warm Heart of Africa," is a small, landlocked country whose eastern border follows the shores of Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake on the continent. Its landscape is remarkably diverse, ranging from the dramatic Rift Valley and the vast expanse of Lake Malawi to high plateaus, escarpments, and lush forests. The country is generally green and fertile, with the highest peaks reaching around 3,000 meters and the lowest points near sea level.
Malawi's people are among its greatest assets — friendly, welcoming, and vibrant. Visitors have opportunities to engage with local cultures through village visits, offering authentic experiences of daily life and traditions. The country also holds a rich history visible in colonial-era buildings, the legacy of explorer David Livingstone, and museums documenting the end of the slave trade.
The climate is moderate across much of the plateau region, with warmer temperatures in the lower Shire River Valley. The rainy season typically runs from mid-October to March, while the winter months of May through July are dry and cool.

Planning Tips
- Visa requirements: Citizens of many countries (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU nations) can obtain a visa on arrival or via an e-visa for $50. Check the list of countries requiring advance visas before you travel.
- Currency: The local currency is the Malawi kwacha (MWK), but foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP) is often accepted for larger purchases. As of late 2025, all accommodation and tourist services must be paid in hard currency. Declare all foreign currency upon arrival.
- Accommodation options: From western-standard hotels in cities like Lilongwe and Blantyre to backpacker hostels (dorms from $10) and lakeside resorts, there's something for every budget.
- Getting around: The M1 road is in excellent condition. For a scenic experience, consider taking the Ilala ferry across Lake Malawi. Driving after dark is not recommended.
- Health precautions: Take antimalarials, use mosquito repellent, and avoid swimming in freshwater where bilharzia is present. Drink bottled or treated water, and get travel insurance.
- Respect local customs: Dress modestly (women should avoid shorts/miniskirts outside resorts), always greet with a handshake, and be patient with curious locals. Homosexuality is illegal in Malawi.
