About this place
Reno, the "Biggest Little City in the World," sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada in northwestern Nevada, offering a blend of downtown casino energy and high-desert outdoor adventure. The city serves as the urban hub for a region that includes Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and historic Virginia City, making it a convenient base for exploring both Nevada's wide-open spaces and California's mountain playgrounds.
While gambling built Reno's reputation through the 20th century, today's downtown is reinventing itself with a walkable riverfront arts district, a growing brewery and dining scene, and entertainment venues that draw visitors beyond the casino floor. Venture south of the Truckee River toward the California Avenue area and you'll find calmer, more local-feeling neighborhoods with independent shops and cafés.

Things to Do
- Kayak the Truckee River Whitewater Park — Rent gear right downtown at Wingfield Park and paddle through urban rapids, a surprising outdoor experience in the heart of the city.
- Hike to the "N" landmark — Start from Rancho San Rafael Park and hike up to the hillside whitewash letter overlooking Reno; choose a longer, gentler trail or the steep direct ascent.
- Mountain bike Peavine Mountain — Explore networks of singletrack in the open desert northwest of town, but carry plenty of water and be aware of other land users in the area.
- Hit the ski slopes — More than a half-dozen major ski resorts lie within two hours of Reno, making the city a practical winter base for skiers and snowboarders.
- Road bike the Truckee River trail — Ride the paved path along the river through Reno and Sparks, part of a long-term bikeway project linking Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake.

Things to See

- Truckee River Arts District — Stroll the Riverwalk along First Street for galleries, coffee shops, and river views, then head south to the California Avenue area for boutiques and wine bars.
- Nevada Museum of Art — A cultural anchor in downtown Reno with rotating exhibitions and a focus on the art and environment of the American West.
- Lake Tahoe day trip — About an hour's drive southwest, the iconic alpine lake offers year-round recreation and some of the most dramatic scenery in the region.
- Virginia City — This historic mining town, home of the Comstock Lode, lies a short drive away and preserves the boomtown energy of the 19th-century silver rush.

Best Time to Visit
- Late May through mid-October — This window offers the most reliable warm weather, low precipitation, and long sunshine hours for hiking, biking, kayaking, and festival season.
- September to early October — Summer crowds taper off while daytime temperatures stay pleasant; the Truckee River is still runnable and high-country trails remain open.
- February to March — Peak season for skiers who want deep Sierra snowpack without the holiday lift lines of December and January.
- Avoid major holiday ski weekends — I-80 over Donner Summit sees heavy Friday-evening inbound traffic and Sunday-evening outbound traffic, especially around Christmas, New Year, and Presidents' Day.

Planning Tips
- Getting around — RTC RAPID buses run frequent service along the Virginia Street corridor between downtown and Meadowood Mall; taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful downtown and at the airport.
- Winter driving — If you're crossing the Sierra from California between November and May, check the forecast and carry chains unless you have four-wheel drive and snow tires.
- The long desert drive — Reno is about 8 hours from Las Vegas on US 95; plan fuel and meal stops carefully and consider driving at night in summer to avoid the worst heat.
- Burning Man staging — If you're visiting in late August, expect hotels to be busy and stores to stock extra camping supplies for burners headed to Black Rock City.
